A Simple Weekly Hair Oiling Routine with Castor and Rosemary
Champi with oil is a tradition in many Pakistani homes. Here is a simple, practical routine for using a castor and rosemary blend.
Why blends are used
Castor oil is very thick and sticky on its own, so it is usually mixed with lighter oils. Rosemary essential oil is strong and must always be diluted in a carrier oil — never put undiluted essential oil on your skin. Black seed (kalonji) oil is another traditional favourite.
The routine
1. Warm a small amount of oil by placing the bottle in a cup of warm water for a few minutes — warm, not hot.
2. Part your hair into sections and apply the oil to the scalp with your fingertips.
3. Massage gently in small circles for 5 minutes. Gentle pressure is enough.
4. Smooth any leftover oil along the lengths of your hair.
5. Leave it on for one to a few hours, or overnight with an old pillow cover.
6. Wash with a mild shampoo. You may need to shampoo twice to remove thick oils.
How often?
Once or twice a week suits most people. Oiling every day can leave the scalp greasy and may not suit oily or acne-prone skin.
Patch test first
Before your first use, apply a drop to the inside of your arm and wait 24 hours. If you notice redness, itching or burning, do not use it. Keep oils away from your eyes.
Keeping expectations realistic
A regular oil massage is a relaxing care ritual and helps with dry hair. No oil is proven to cure hair loss. If you notice sudden, patchy or heavy hair fall, please see a dermatologist, as it can have many causes that need proper diagnosis.
